Garibaldi adopted the red shirt in the 1840s and sported this one during his defense of the Roman Republic in 1849. He was wearing this shirt when his wife Anita died in his arms that year. The stains on the shirt are blood. In 1850 he presented it to Antonio Meucci when Garibaldi lived in his house on Staten Island in 1850-51.
