Giuseppe Garibaldi, the freedom fighter who unified Italy,had to flee the country in 1849 after the collapseof the revolutions. He came to New York, wherehe lived with Antonio Meucci on Staten Island in1850-51, when this portrait was painted. In 1888New York's Italian citizens erected a statue inGaribaldi's honor in Washington Square Park.
