Freeing the Angel
From the Stone
Attilio Piccirilli created all eight sculptures
on view in Freeing the Angel from the Stone. The Italian American
Museum is pleased to exhibit Attilio Piccirilli's sculptures in
various media. The earliest work on view is Head of a Boy (1889),
bronze. This as well as Head of a Woman (1901), Leonardo da Vinci
(ca. 1940) and Spring Dream (1918), all bronze, were created as
individual works. Mrs. Josephine Louise Newcomb (1900), marble,
was a portrait commission. Atlantic: Sketch for the Maine Memorial
Monument (1910) is a plaster study for one of the colossal fi
gures in the Maine Monument at Columbus Circle, in New York City.
The Outcast, a bronze from1904, is a smaller version of a much
larger public funerary sculpture now located in Woodlawn Cemetery
in the Bronx. The Thomas Jefferson bronze bust (1939) is owned
by Queens College, The City University of New York. Another version,
created as a marble portrait bust, is housed in the State Capitol
Building in Richmond, VA. Please enjoy these sculptures as you
visit the Italian American Museum, while observing Attilio's subtle
expression, universal appeal, and ability to please the viewer.
